Chapter 22

Evangeline and John sat motionless as they watched Victor leave the restaurant.

"Oh my God!" Evangeline cried trying to regain her composure. "I never meant for any of this to happen."

"I know," John replied distracted by his own thoughts. "But you've got to pull yourself together. It's not your fault that Keesha got shot. There's no way either one of us could have known a gun would be involved."

"But I should have known, it could turn into a volitile situation," she said wiping the tears away. "What do you think we should do? Maybe we could leave town? I'm sure Victor has no idea, I set this terrible night in motion."

"I'm sure he doesn't know, but he will in time. Victor is a very smart and perceptive man. Although running seems like a good idea and would definitely buy us some time. It would just make matters worse once he found us."

"If that's the case, then I'll go to Victor and tell him the truth," Evangeline said. "I'll keep your name out of it and pay the consequences."

John couldn't help but smile at Evangeline's willingness to protect him. "That's very noble of you Ms. Williamson, but I'm man enough to face Victor's wrath."

"Whatever happens, we'll face it together," John said holding Evangeline's hand.

"Together,"Evangeline replied softly squeezing John's hand.
