Web of Deception Chapter 14

Evangeline traced the muscles on John's chest with her soapy left foot, as they soaked in the large bathtub.

"So, what's your story John McBain?"

Under normal circumstances, John would have evaded her question, but in their brief time together, he felt more than a sexual connection with this brown-eyed beauty. John didn't believe in love at first sight, but he truly believed that Evangeline was the woman he had been waiting for all his life, except he didn't know it until now.

Without giving it a second thought, he let down his guard and told Evangeline his life story of being from a typical working class Irish-American family of New York cops. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father were cops, so naturally he followed in their footsteps, however, he decided to join the FBI.

With his tough as nails attitude and smarts, he was able to produce impressive results, which allowed him to rise through the ranks.

Evangeline sat mesmerized by this gorgeous man. For some reason she felt so comfortable in his presence. With the other men in her life, she always had to downplay her strength to appease their egos. But John was somehow different. Could she actually be falling for this man after just a few hours? "No, it's just lust" she said to herself.

"Anyway, I got tired of all the bureaucratic bullshit, trying to bring criminals to justice, so I quit the force and became a private detective."

"Private detective?" Evangeline said with interest. "Are you any good?"

"I thought I proved that to you," he said slowly suckling her toes.

"I meant as a PI," she said becoming aroused by the seductive act.

"Well, I do like to be the best at everything I do, so I guess the answer to your question is yes."

"I do like a confident man," she smiled.

"So what's your story, Ms. Williamson?

"I'm here for two reasons. The first is business, which I've taken care of. Now, I'm preparing to settle an old score."

"Do tell," he said intrigued.

Evangeline told John about her upper middle class childhood and her father instilling in her a never lose or settle for second attitude. Since she never wanted to disappoint her father, she always strived to be the best.

When her fiance dumped her for another woman, Evangeline tried to let it go, but now she was determined to teach the other woman a lesson.

"So I gather, the other woman has no idea who your are?"

"I doubt it. I've been keeping a low profile, while getting close to her daughter."

"What does her daughter have to do with anything?"

"She's engaged to my former fiance."

A chill ran down John's spine. "It can't be," he thought to himself. "So what's the doomed woman's name," he asked afraid to hear the answer.

Before Evangeline could answer there was a knock at the door. Since the person would not go away, Evangeline got out of the tub to answer the door.

John dried himself off and went into the bedroom to get dressed, when he heard the sound of the two women talking.

"I'm so sorry to interrupt you, but I really need to talk to someone."

"It's not a problem, but why don't I meet you downstairs in the restaurant. I have someone here, if you know what I mean."

An embarrassed look crossed Keesha's face. "Maybe I should come back another time."

"Don't be silly Keesha. I'll be down in twenty minutes."

The mention of Keesha's name stopped John cold in his tracks. Although he had never met Victor's stepdaughter, he remembered seeing her picture on the desk of his office downtown.

"Maybe it's not her," he whispered. John peeked through the bedroom door and saw Keesha's face, just as she left the suite. "Shit!"

Evangeline came into the bedroom and saw the ashen look on John's face. "What's wrong with you?"

"Nothing, but I need to talk to you."

"Okay, but let's do it later. That was the girl I was telling you about at the door. She's having some type of crisis and needs a shoulder to cry on. Of course I'm more than willing to oblige," she said with a smile.

"That's what I need to talk to you about," he said with a sense of urgency.

"I know what I'm doing is petty and spiteful, but I won't be satisfied until I've settled the score."

"You don't understand."

Evangeline silenced John with a passionate kiss. "I promise we'll talk later," she said and left.

Common sense told John to run and get out while he could. But this beautiful woman had gotten under his skin. "Well, I always did like living on the edge."

John prayed he would be able to talk Evangeline out of this insane plan. If not, they would come face to face with their worse nightmare, Victor Mansfield.
