Chapter 4

"You're what! Evangeline what the hell is going on?" she said in a hushed whisper.

"One of the defendants in a case that I am presiding over supposedly put a hit out on my life." She said with a shrug of her shoulders.

"What!" she asked stunned by her friends revelation.

"Yeah I know tell me about it." She said. They both sat in silence for a moment and that was broken by Maurice who brought over their salads.

"Okay, okay let me get this straight. A guy you are trying for whatever has put a hit out on your life and you are sitting here like it is another day in the life of Judge Evangeline Williamson." Makayla said as she dug into her salad.

"What should I do Kay? Go into hiding until some other Judge sends him away?" she asked perturbed by her comment.

"I am not saying that, not that at all Van. But you do have to take this threat seriously and it seems."

"What it seems like I am not? Is that what you were going to say?" she was getting angry now. A mild headache started to form at the base of her skull and was traveling down into her shoulders.

"That is not what I meant." She said placing her fork down and looking her friend dead into her eyes, "The FBI obviously thinks that this guy is some kind of major threat to your safety or they wouldn't have an FBI agent protecting you from a possible attempt on your life."

"I know, I know. But what am I supposed to do?"

"I don't know." Makayla said as she picked her fork up and continued eating her salad.

"I talked with Reese before I met you for lunch." Evangeline said softly fingering her water glass.

Makayla dropped her fork and stared at Evangeline "Oh really, what did our former roommate have to say?"

"She said that John, I mean Agent McBain is the best that Quantico has produced in a long while."

"Well at least they didn't give you some rookie." She said laughing.

"Really, I think I would have had to jump on some heads if that happened." The women continued eating their salads and lunch as they caught up on their family life and current court cases.

"Van, listen I want you to keep me up to date on everything that is going on okay?" she said rising from her chair getting ready to leave the restaurant.

"Of course Kay, you know I will." She said leaning in and hugging her friend.

John stood and walked over to the two women embracing keeping his eyes trained on the restaurant patrons. He stood behind Evangeline as she said her goodbyes to MaKayla.

"Listen Agent McBain. You keep my friend here safe or so help you God, every judge on the bench will have your head before you could blink." She said pointing her finger towards John.

"Yes ma'am your Honor." He responded coldly.

"Are you ready?" he asked as he placed a hand on her back.

"Yeah, we need to get back I have some cases to hear." She said disappointedly. "Thanks for lunch see you next week same time, and this time I get to pick the place." Evangeline said as they all left the restaurant.

"Of course." Makayla said as they stood outside the restaurant. They hugged one last time and John ushered Evangeline back across the street to the car. "Thank you." She said as she bowed her head to get into the car.

He smiled and waited till she was all the way in the car before he closed the door.

"Back to the court house?" he asked as he slid into the driver's side and checked the mirrors before pulling out into traffic.

She nodded at his statement. John drove them back to the court house and ushered her quickly through the parking garage up to her office.

"Marie, are we on schedule?" Evangeline asked as she opened the door to the office.

"We are your honor." She replied taking Evangeline's and John's jackets from them and hanging them up in the closet behind her desk.

"That is what I like to here. Do you have those case files that I asked for this morning?" she asked as she went through her messages.

"Yes, yes I do they are on your desk. Also your sister called right before you got in."

"What did she say she wanted?"

John froze at the sister comment. There was nothing in her file about a sister and he had read it cover to cover. There was nothing about a sister. Everything was about her law career, her record before she was appointed to the bench and her rulings while she's been on the bench. Whoever put her dossier together was going to have some explaining to do. A sister was not part of the equation and he was not prepared to protect two women at the same time. It could be done but he would have to rework everything. "Wait, wait, you have a sister?' John asked interjecting into the conversation.

"Yes, I do. Why does that matter Agent McBain?" she asked with an annoyed look on her face.

"Does she live with you?"

"What does that have on anything that is going on right now?"

"Judge Williamson." he said scowling at her and getting in her space.

"No she does not live with me, she lives downtown with her boyfriend." She snapped before turning her attention back to Marie.

"What did she want Marie."

"She didn't say. Just to call her as soon as possible. She did sound a little scared though."

"Scared?" Evangeline asked turning back to look at John. She ran into her office and picked up the phone and called her sister. "Layla!" she said as Layla finally answered the phone.

"Oh, Van. Where have you been I have been calling all over town looking for you?"

Evangeline paced back and forth behind her desk as John stood watching her intently "Layla, slow down. What is going on did something happen to mom?"

"No, no mom is fine."

"Then what Layla, what is going on?"

"It is Phillip."

"What about your boyfriend." She said finally exhaling a deep breath and taking a seat at her desk. She looked up at John who was listening in on the conversation and mouthed, "It is okay." And then pointed to the door. John nodded at her and turned to leave.

"Excuse me Marie." John said politely and walked out of the office and into the hallway. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed his office, "West who was responsible for putting together the dossier on Judge Williamson?"

"John?"

"Yeah, West. Now answer the damn question."

"I don't know I think it was that newbie Randall. Why?"

"Did you know she had a sister!" he snapped.

"No, what! Shit John." West said rubbing his eyes and face.

"Tell me about it, I need everything that you have on a Layla Williamson, text my phone when you have something anything." He snapped shutting the phone.

John placed a hand on the door to the judge's chambers and closed his eyes blowing out a deep breath. This was not something he was planning on happening. He had already heard about Judge Williamson, but now having to possibly deal with her sister was another story.

"Layla, I thought something serious happened. I really cannot get in to anything with you right now about Phillip. I have to be in court in ten minuets." She said looking down at her watch.

"Well, can I come over for dinner or something? I really need some big sister advice."

"Yeah, I guess. Just let your self in. You still have the key I gave you right?"

"Yes, Evangeline. I do. I will see you later."

"Bye Lay," She replied annoyed that her little sister had frightened her so much. She placed the phone back on the base and took a deep breath. She leaned her head back against her chair and tried to fight off the headache that started to form again. A knock at the door made her even more annoyed. "Yeah, come in." she yelled.

The door slowly opened and John walked in. "Sorry to bother you Judge Williamson, but." he stopped at seeing how stressed she was. He walked over to the desk and stood next to it. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

She opened one of her eyes at his statement, "No I'm not." She said then closed her eye back.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" he asked leaning in closer to her.

He was so close to her that she could feel his hot breath against her neck and the deep sound of his voice relaxed her like she had never known before, "I'm developing the makings of a serious headache here. And my sister didn't help the cause" She replied as a weak smiled crept across her face.

"Give me your hand." He said holding out his.

"What?" she asked as her eyes shot open and she turned her chair to face John who was now sitting on the edge of her desk.

"Give me your hand." He said once again and reached down and took her hand anyway.

The look on her face amused him to no end. He started messaging the space in between her fingers. At first her hand was tense in his but slowly she started to relax against his touch.

His hands were softer than they looked and that surprised her. As he massaged the space between her fingers she noticed that her headache started to diminish. Her eyes closed and she sunk back into her chair. She let out a soft moan that startled her and she opened one eye to see if he had noticed this. He smirked at how relaxed she was getting at his touch.

With her head resting on the back of the chair her neck was exposed and he rose and started to move towards her to massage her neck.

"Judge Williamson are you ready?" Marie asked as she walked into the chambers and saw John hovering over Evangeline with his hands primed to either strangle her or massage her neck. He quickly dropped his hands and stepped back away from her.

"Umm, yes Marie. Could you walk with me, I need a quick reminder of what is going on." She said rising from her desk and heading to her closet to get her robe.

John reached out and took the robe from her and held it out so that she could put it on, "Thank you." She replied and looked back over her shoulder at the FBI agent.

He nodded in acknowledgement of her thanks. He moved to open the door for her as she zipped the robe up. All three of them left the office and headed into the courtroom.

"Okay, first up is The State vs. Fairview." Marie said as she tried to keep up with Evangeline's pace. "Mr. Blair the defendant's attorney is asking for a continuance in his case."

"Okay, what is after that?" Evangeline asked stopping in front of the back door to the court room.

"Umm, let's see." Marie asked as she flipped through her notebook. "Let me see here, it looks like another continuance in the Doherty case."

"What is up with these lawyers and their continuances, haven't they heard of a speedy trial before?" Evangeline said with annoyance in her voice. "What is after that?"
"Mr. Ramirez is back." Marie said quietly.

"What?" she asked as her hand stopped at the handle of the door.

"Yes, your honor."

"They were here this morning what do they want now?"

"It seems that some new evidence has arisen in the case that could change the tide of everything."

"Okay, well let's go." She said as she walked into the courtroom with John following her.

"All rise. The Honorable Judge Evangeline Williamson presiding." Announced the bailiff. Evangeline walked into court room and sat down behind her bench. "Be seated."
