Part 23

The incessant beeping of the monitor woke Keesha from a deep sleep. The blurred vision of a figure dressed in white was hovering over her head. Focusing harder, Keesha noticed the figure in white was Dr. Tony Jones. He was writing some information on a chart, while performing his examination.

"What happened?" Keesha asked, attempting to sit up. Her senses were awakened by the sharp pain piercing through her body.

"Be careful," Tony said, slowly easing her back down in the bed. "You need to take it easy."

"How did I get here? I don't understand….(I have a message from an old friend. You need to leave town by tomorrow. If not, I'll pay an unpleasant visit to you and your baby!"

Keesha felt a sense of sheer panic, as memories of the stranger began to surface. "Oh my God, that man tried to kill me!" she cried. "Tony, he was going to hurt my baby!"

"Keesha calm down," he replied, trying to ease her fears. "Trust me, you're safe."

"What about my baby?" Keesha asked hysterically.

"What are you doing to her?" Jason demanded, as he made his way into the room, with AJ following behind.

"Oh Jason," Keesha cried holding out her arms for his embrace.

Jason rushed to the bed, gently kissing her bruised face and hands. "Oh baby," he cried. "My heart stopped, when I saw you laying in the street. I thought I lost you." Looking up at AJ, "if it wasn't for AJ…" his voice trailed off, not wanting to imagine the worse.

Tears streamed down AJ's face, as his emotions ran wild. Although it pained him to see Keesha battered and bruised, something wonderful came out of this tragedy. For the first time since Jason woke from the coma, he felt an emotional connection to his "brother."

"Maybe, there's a chance we could be brothers again," he thought. But he knew false hope could be a dangerous thing. Instead he would try to help Jason and Keesha any way he could.

"Come here AJ," Keesha demanded, through outreached arms.

AJ hesitated, unsure of Jason's reaction. Tonight was full of surprises as Jason gave him a nod of approval.

Tony stood dumbfounded at the sight of the two brothers embracing the woman they both loved. "Excuse me," Tony said. "I hate to interrupt this intimate moment, but I need to talk to my patient alone."

"We're not leaving," Jason coldly replied.

From the defiant look in the eyes of Jason and AJ, Tony knew there was no use trying to argue.

"Tony, it's okay. Whatever you have to tell me, you can say it in front of Jason and AJ," she said.

"If you're sure."

"Yes, I'm sure. It's okay," she replied, squeezing Jason's hand, as AJ stood on the other side of the bed, gently rubbing her right shoulder.

"Overall, everything is fine. You suffered a mild concussion and sprained wrist. Aside from the bumps and bruises, you're going to be fine," he said.

"There's something you're not telling us. What is it?" Jason demanded.

"Is that true, Tony?" AJ asked.

Since the accident, Tony had learned to ignore Jason's angry outburst. Looking directly at Keesha and AJ, "I'm so sorry, but you lost the baby. However, with plenty of rest, you'll be able to have more children," he said, trying to be reassuring.

"Noooo," Keesha screamed. "Not my baby. Why?"

"Baby!" Jason and AJ spoke at the same time, both wondering if the other was the father.

"What baby?" Jason asked in total shock.

Tear filled eyes looked up at Jason. " I was going to surprise you tonight," Keesha sobbed. "I don't understand why this happened. Why did that man want to hurt me? How did he know about our baby, when I just found out this morning?"

Jason felt a sharp pain through his heart. Their child was dead, ripped from their lives. He held Keesha close, as Tony and AJ stepped outside the room, to let them grieve in private.

"Are you sure she's going to be all right?" AJ asked, wiping the tears from his eyes.

"The loss of a child is the most painful experience you can go through. I'm not saying it's going to be easy. But with the love of her family and friends, I'm sure she'll recover," Tony said. "Just so you know, I gave Keesha a sedative for the pain. She'll probably sleep through the night."

"When can she go home?"

"In a couple of days. I'll prescribe her some medication and instructions for complete rest."

"Thanks, for your help Tony."

"AJ, I'm confused," he said. "I thought you and Keesha were getting married. What's going on?" Tony asked.

"Let's just say true love conquers all."

"Forget I asked," Tony replied.

As Tony walked away, AJ turned to see Jason step out of the room. "How's she doing?" he asked.

"She fell sleep," Jason replied. The sight of pain on Jason's face a few minutes ago was replaced by a look of cold hard granite. "She told me what happened before falling asleep. "This animal grabbed her from behind and threatened to harm her and the baby, unless she left town by tomorrow. He said the message was from an old friend."

The hairs on the back of AJ's neck stood up, as that nagging feeling came back to haunt him.

"How did he know, she was pregnant," Jason wondered. "Who would want to harm Keesha and our child?"

"There's no other way to say this Jason, but I think it was Robin," AJ said.

"Why?" Jason calmly asked, remembering their earlier conversation. "Back at the restaurant, you said Robin told you about me and Keesha. How did she find out?"

"That's what I was trying to tell you, before Carly interrupted," AJ explained. "Apparently, Robin hired a PI to follow Keesha, hoping to find some dirt to use against her, in case she ever tried to get you back. But she got an eyeful, after seeing the two of you on videotape making love at some cabin."

"How could she have video taped us. There's no way anyone could have planted any type of device," Jason said.

"Well, that's not exactly true. ELQ is working on electronic video and recording devices that are undetectable to the human eye. Obviously, the device must have been planted on something Keesha wore everyday. Like earrings or a watch."

"This is my fault," Jason whispered. "Keesha said Robin wouldn't let me go without a fight, but I thought she was overreacting."

"This isn't your fault, Jason. None of us could've imagined Robin would do something like this," AJ replied.

"Robin and her hired help are going to pay dearly for this," Jason said in a harsh tone. "She's hurt Keesha for the last time."

"I'm sure she's heard the news by now and gotten out of town," AJ said.

"It doesn't matter how far she goes, or how long it takes. I'm going to hunt that bitch down!"
