Chapter 10

Evangeline's Townhouse

"How long are you going to keep me waiting out here?" Evangeline called to John from the bedroom.

"Be patient. I'll be out in a minute," he laughed. "I promise. It'll be worth the wait."

It had been a week since Evangeline and John returned from Philadelphia. Since that time, they had been playing hooky, making love and basking in wedded bliss, while getting to know each other. They loved curling up in bed with large bowls of cereal watching old cartoons or critiquing crappy b-movies. John discovered that although Evangeline ate healthy, she had a secret addiction to junk food. While looking through her desk for a pen, he discovered her stash of snickers and Oreo cookies.

One night Evangeline decided to relax and popped in a Whisper's CD. John suddenly pulled her to the floor and they began doing some serious stepping. "Where did you learn how to step?" she asked.

"I've picked up some things here and there," he slyly replied, spinning her around without missing a beat.

"How much longer?" she asked impatiently.

"Two more minutes," he called back. "I want everything to be perfect"

Although they had a huge breakfast earlier, Evangeline's stomach started to rumble. She decided to go downstairs and prepare a fruit tray, while waiting for John's surprise. She placed slices of apples, cantaloup, strawberries, watermelon, cheese and crackers along with two glasses of orange juice on the tray. She was headed up the stairs, when the doorbell suddenly rang. "Who is it?" she asked.

"It's Blair Manning. I really need to talk to you."

Evangeline assumed it must be business related, since she and Blair were mere business acquaintances. "Hello, Blair," Evangeline said, opening the door."

"Hi Evangeline....."

"Here's comes Big Papa!" John yelled, as he landed at the bottom of the stairs wearing a black cape and filling out a red thong, which showed a happy face.

"John, no!" Evangeline shouted.

"Well, hello Big Papa," Blair drooled, enjoying the view from head to toe. "I have to say the name definitely fits."

John stood in the middle of the living room dying from humiliation. He looked to Evangeline for compassion, but she was too busy trying to muffle her laughter. All the while, Blair continued to eat him up with her eyes. He attempted to make as graceful an exit as possible. "If you ladies will excuse me, I think I'll just take my embarrassment and go back upstairs," he said nervously, walking backwards upstairs using the cape to cover himself.

"I'll be up in a minute," Evangeline replied, trying hard not to laugh. "So what can I do for you Blair."

Blair continued watching John climb the stairs, until he disappeared from view.

"Earth to Blair!" Evangeline shouted, poking her in the shoulders. "What do you want?"

Blair turned around and looked at Evangeline with pure admiration. "What do I want? I want you to tell me what's going on between you and McHunk...what's that?" Blair asked grabbing Evangeline's left hand.

"What's what?" Evangeline asked pulling her hand away, trying to guide Blair out the door.

Refusing to be ignored, Blair sidestepped Evangeline and once again grabbed a hold of her left arm. "Oh my god!" she exclaimed. "This looks like a wedding ring...holy shit, you married John McBain!"

"You're mistaken, Blair," Evangeline replied annoyed. "We're just having a casual fling, not that it's any of your business."

"Girlfriend, your secret is safe with me," Blair laughed giving Evangeline a hug. "I think it's great! That is one sexy man you have up there. And from the look on your face, I can see Big John is working it good."

Despite Evangeline's annoyance at Blair's presence and directness, she couldn't help but like her. In some ways, she reminded her of Marita. "Let's just say he makes me happy and leave it at that," Evangeline smiled.

"No doubt. I take it that little Ms. Pumkinhead doesn't know anything about this?" Blair asked, being catty.

"If you're referring to Natalie, the answer is no. We've been trying to keep things low key a little while longer," Evangeline replied nonchalantly.

"Bullshit!" Blair laughed taking a seat at the bar. "You haven't said anything to Natalie, because you know the little skank would be trying to make moves on your man. You may not know this, but that child has no scruples. Trust me once she finds out how John has not only transformed himself, but become wealthy in the process, her true colors will show. So you'd be wise to watch your back."

"Thanks for the advice, but I'm not worried about Natalie," Evangeline said confidently. "I'm the only woman John wants or needs."

"Well, go on Ms. Thing," Blair laughed. "We definitely have to do lunch next week. I have a strong feeling that we're going to become very good friends."

"That's funny, I was thinking the same thing," Evangeline smiled. "Now if you don't mind, my man is waiting."

"Oh sure," Blair smiled heading for the door. "You go ride that big buck. But don't forget what I said about Natalie."

"Trust me. When the time comes, I'll handle Natalie."
